How to hit your word count without padding
If you're short
- Add evidence. A quote, statistic, or case study each adds 30–60 words and improves your argument.
- Address counterarguments. “Critics argue… however…” adds depth and 100–200 words.
- Define key terms. If you use specialised vocabulary, one-sentence definitions help the reader and fill space legitimately.
- Show your reasoning. Replace “this is why” with the actual chain of logic.
- Expand transitions. Connect each paragraph to the next with a sentence that summarises and previews.
If you're over
- Remove empty intensifiers. “Very,” “really,” “actually,” “basically” usually add no meaning.
- Combine sentences. Short stacked sentences often say the same thing twice.
- Cut throat-clearing intros. “In today's world…” can almost always be deleted.
- Replace phrases with single words. “Due to the fact that” → “because.” “In order to” → “to.”
- Trim weak examples. One strong example beats three weak ones.
